Nålbinding is an endangered ancient textile craft that predates both knitting and crocheting by centuries. The word literally means “binding with a needle,” and that describes this technique rather effectively. In essence, it’s binding stitches together with a single needle and short lengths of yarn to create textiles. Ancient Norse people created this technique and used it to make everything from mittens and socks to bags, blankets, hats, and more.
In this workshop participants will learn about the craft and its history, and teach the basics of nalbinding.
Note: Hand-carved wooden needles can also be purchased from Kim at the class for $10 each, cash only please.

MITTEN MAGIC CLASS Three 2-hour Sessions Cost: $120 (pattern & yarn to be purchased separately) Dates & Times Session 1: Saturday, October 25/25 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Session 2: Saturday, November 1/25 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Session 3: Saturday, November 8/25 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Teachers: Judy & Cheryl
Please join Judy & Cheryl to learn all of the techniques needed to knit a pair of these fabulous mittens! Feel free to enjoy wearing them yourself or gift them to someone special.
As shown in the photo below, these mittens consist of 2 layers; the outside of the mitten (left) is knit using a single strand of fingering weight yarn and the extra cozy, warm inside layer (right) is knit holding a strand of fingering weight yarn along with a strand of lace weight mohair.
Students will learn a special type of cast on, a Provisional Cast-On where your stitches remain “live” so that you can collect them later to knit in the other direction without a seam! After choosing and knitting your style of cuff from the 3 options, you will then learn to knit a beautifully shaped gusset for the thumb that fits the natural shape of our palm. Talk about comfortable! The body of the mitten will then be worked and topped off with your choice of finishes for the tip of the mitten. With the inner layer complete, students will then be guided on collecting the live stitches (that have been waiting for you), from that special cast on edge, so you can seamlessly work the outer layer of your mitten! Ingenious!
Rated: All Knitters Pre-Requisite: Knowledge of knit stitch; beneficial to know how to work in the round.
Required: Students will purchase separately the “Mitten Magic” pattern [DP-158] and their choice of Fingering weight yarn (100g) or Sock yarn (100g) and Lace weight Mohair (25g) from London Yarns. There are many options available. Bring to Class: 3.25mm double pointed needle, tape measure, darning needle, scissors, pen, paper.
